ROTC VISITS SOUTH CAROLINA

Twelve NJROTC cadets along with two chaperones attended the Marine Corps Mini Boot camp at Parris island South Carolina. Following a 13 hour car ride to the island, the cadets met their drill instructor for the week, SGT Moss and were ordered to make their racks and store their belongings in small footlockers. On day 2, the cadets awoke to their first full day which started with a visit to the track and a early morning workout and run. The Cadets also visited the Marine Corps Museum which tells the history of the United States Marine Corp since it's creation in 1775 to present day. The Cadets were then instructed by their Drill Instructor on the Marine Corps and Navy core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. The Cadets were also allowed to observe Marine Corps Marksmanship training. The remainder of the day was spent with the Drill Instructor helping GHS NJROTC Drill team prepare for the remainder of their drill season. On day 3, the cadets were joined by a Marine JROTC unit from Beaufort, South Carolina and trained on rappelling techniques and allowed to repel off of a 60 ft tower. The cadets were then paired with the Marine Cadets into teams of 10 and were given team building exercises to do that required both physical strength as well as mental problem solving. The Cadets finished the day with a visit to the on base beach. On day 4, the cadets were joined by a Navy JROTC unit from Columbia, South Carolina and were permitted to shoot the M16 Rifle Simulator. The two groups of Cadets then went to the Confidence Course which is a series of tasks that tests the recruits confidence both mentally and physically as they scale walls and use ropes to jump or climb over obstacles. The cadets then were challenged to complete the same obstacle course Marine Recruits are required to complete before graduation. The Cadets were also allowed to go to the receiving station where the famous yellow footprints are and Marine training really begins. The last day was spent packing and after attending a Marine Graduation the Cadets made the trip back to Greenville.
