South Middle School Science - Energy

The science classrooms of Mrs. House and Mrs. Byram recently completed their energy units. Students learned about the various types of energy, including light and sound. The Ohio Academic Content Standards for 5th grade science state that students must be able to explore and summarize observations of the transmission, bending (refraction), and reflecton of light. They must also be able to describe and summarize observatons of the transmission, reflection, and absorption of sound. While studying these areas, Dave Shellhaas, from the Darke County Educational Service Center, shared activities that allowed the students to better understand these concepts. Many of these activities were hands on using equipment and supplies that are not typically found in the classroom setting. Mrs. House and Mrs. Byram appreicate Mr. Shellhaas coming into their classrooms to help extend their students understanding.
